Hanover Cabinets thanks Employment Partners for new job hire

About five weeks into the job, Autumn has become a great member of the team, Cushway said

MOOSE JAW – A Moose Jaw employer was surprised when a representative from Partners in Employment visited his store to promote a customer after he posted a job opening five weeks ago.

Jason Cushway, owner of Hanover Cabinets says: “We were advertising for a cabinet maker and were approached by Partners in Employment to see if we would be interested in interviewing someone they had been recruiting for. work with him brother Joe Cushway.

The interview went well and we ended up hiring him. Now he works for us full time.”

He explained that the reason for the inspection visit is because many employers are reluctant to hire people with disabilities. Either way, his view was that anyone who was willing to work and learn, who could do the work required, and who took the effort to submit a CV deserved opportunity.

“I said, ‘If you think he can do the job I’m asking for, then I have no problem calling him for an interview.'” His attitude is the same as anyone interested in a job. “Anyone who came in with a resume, as long as it wasn’t a good fit, I called them all the next day and we set up an interview.”

Cushway said he wasn’t sure what to expect and was told the young woman was very shy. “But he was shy – he was very open, ready for the interview, answered all the questions, and yes, that surprised me. A lot of people are very scared.”

He said he showed interest in carpentry so he was assigned to build cabinets full time.

“He had to learn (everything) from scratch, but he’s already picking it up… Anything he doesn’t understand he immediately asks questions,” he said. “That’s what struck me during the interview – I knew he wouldn’t have a problem catching on because he’s young and ambitious.

“I don’t know what disability is and I don’t care because it works well,” he added.

About five weeks into the job, Autumn has become a great member of the team, Cushway said. “More (this) than anyone I’ve had in a year here.”

Cushway said his job was available about four weeks before Autumn was hired and he received only five other applications – but none of them were interested in the jobs.

“If we put it this way, I have two young men who have been here for more than 10 years. Then… the rest seem to last a year, two, three, and then leave. That’s my problem – catching those people at work. (Autumn) he will be a worker. ”

To show appreciation, SaskAbilities – which oversees the Partners in Employment program – featured Hanover Cabinets on its social media platform during Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. They also invited their owners and Autumn to lunch as a way of saying thank you.

In his show of appreciation, Cushway gave advice to other employers on whether or not they should hire people with disabilities. He said SaskAbilities does a good job of screening for job suitability and recruiting local workers who are eager to work.

“If someone fits the bill… I’m not the only one struggling to find people,” she said, urging other employers to consider Partners in Employment. “If I was afraid to do it, I would have lost this whole opportunity, wouldn’t I?”

When asked if he would consider hiring SaskAbilities again, Cushway’s answer was affirmative. If I have a job and they come to me again, yes. I would do this again in a heartbeat. ”
